Save a Smile
Helping Underserved Children Achieve Healthy Smiles
Save a Smile is an innovative, collaborative program that harnesses the power of hundreds of volunteer community dentists to provide much needed services to children who might otherwise go without dental care. led by Cook Children’s Community Health Outreach department, and under the leadership of Dr. Tonya Fuqua, the Save a Smile program provides preventative and restorative dental care to children in targeted schools, from pre-kindergarten through third grade.
Save a Smile is a unique and powerful partnership between local dentists, the Fort Worth District Dental Society, Communities In Schools of Greater Tarrant County, and multiple school districts. Since its inception, this important service has screened over 36,000 students and provided nearly $4 million of free dental care to local children in need.
Volunteer dentists visit participating schools to conduct dental screenings and identify at-risk children, and those children are paired with local dentists who diagnose and treat dental problems free of charge. Many of these young patients have never seen a dentist before and suffer from a variety of dental conditions. Save a Smile helps children achieve healthy smiles and works to prevent school absenteeism that results from unresolved dental issues.
Dentists interested in participating in this life-changing program are encouraged to e-mail Dr. Tonya Fuqua for more information.
