Prosthodontists: What You Should Know
A Selective Group
Dr. Steven Fuqua of Fuqua Advanced Dental is part of a select group of advanced dental practitioners who have completed years of additional education and have the high level expertise patients should look for when it comes to implant and cosmetic dentistry. In fact, the Department of Labor estimates that, in 2012, there were only 310 prosthodontists practicing in the U.S.
310! That puts Dr. Fuqua in a very select group of dental professionals with the advanced training and expertise patients should look for when considering dental implants, bridges, crowns or cosmetic dentistry.
Why so few?
It takes real passion and drive to become a prosthodontist. In addition to receiving a D.D.S or a D.M.D, a prosthodontist has to go through advanced post-graduate training and examination. Three years of additional education in an ADA-accredited program provides prosthodontists with a special understanding of the dynamics of a smile, the preservation of a healthy mouth and the creation of tooth replacements. They serve as the architects of dental treatment plans and collaborate with general dentists, specialists and other health professionals to develop solutions to dental and oral health concerns.
That sounds good…but why would I ever need a prosthodontist?
Often, patients are referred to a prosthodontist by their general dentist, but that doesn’t have to be the case.
You may want to visit a prosthodontist if you’re missing one or more teeth, if you wear dentures, if you’re interested in dental implants or if you just want to improve the esthetics of your smile. They’re the experts when it comes to:
- Dental Implants
- Crowns
- Bridges
- Veneers
- Inlays/Onlays
- Complete/Removable dentures
- Esthetics/Cosmetics
Prosthodontists are highly trained in state-of-the-art techniques and procedures for treating diverse and complex dental conditions. They’re masters of complete oral rehabilitation, treating:
- Traumatic injuries to the mouth’s structures
- Cleft palates
- Snoring and sleep disorders
- Oral cancer reconstruction and care
- Congenital or birth anomalies to teeth
- TMD, TMJ or other jaw joint problems
From simple needs to advanced procedures, prosthodontists deliver state-of-the-art dentistry and the highest standards of care.
